A major exhibition is being held from June 22 to August 4, 2013 at the Gold Coast City Gallery - 135 Bundall Road Surfers Paradise.

In 1973 I photographed every building in Surfers Paradise, 33 years later I have completed a re photography project of my own images.

 The architectural analysis is ultimately the reason for this work. The Gold Coast is an almost unique linear city of high rise bordering an ocean with a benign climate and massive growth. Its origins were of  human scaled working class holiday flats and associated infrastructure using a kitsch and derivative style from Las Vegas and Florida. This has all been destroyed, replaced or improved, depending on your point of view.

Already apparent from this early selection is the loss of humour and curiosity that abounded in an innocent era of homespun pleasure and unsophisticated buildings. A de-personalised affront of massed concrete is a poor replacement and an indictment of planning policies at the end of the century. Recent development is more sensitive to the streetscape but nothing is as emotionally and physically accessible as the now demolished paradise!
